Lokahi

We have created a community-based therapeutic hub to bring services to underserved veterans who have barriers to accessing care or available resources. Our interdisciplinary programming implements evidence-based therapeutic activities for mental health and physical rehabilitation through participation in horticulture, landscape maintenance, and other purpose-driven projects.

Our target population addresses the multiple layers of issues that have led to homelessness or being at risk for homelessness. Through collaborative efforts with the support of Ke'ehi Veterans Memorial Organization (KMO), we have created a safe environment where Vets can receive medical and mental interventions from our multidisciplinary team while participating in therapeutic activities that enable them to be productive members in their community.

Program Activities

  • Plant selection and care with native Hawaiian species
  • Site upkeep and landscape maintenance
  • Mala (garden) tending and cultivation
  • Rebuilding structures like our ADA-accessible Hot House and nursery
  • Water quality improvement and bio-remediation projects
  • Culturally focused activities promoting self-sustainability

Tangible Progress Through Meaningful Work

An example of the therapeutic activities veterans participate in includes rebuilding an incapacitated structure into an ADA-accessible Hot House and nursery where native Hawaiian plants can be grown and used throughout the 15+ acres, demonstrating tangible progress and hope.

Activities are designed to build cultural pride and promote self-sustainability by incorporating native Hawaiian plants, improving waterways, and engaging in culturally focused activities that foster pride and a strong community identity among veterans and stakeholders.
